Here's a statement from BT's principle Ms. Lisa Tuttle-Huff:
Dear Parents,
The safety and wellbeing of your students has always been the primary concern for all of us here at Butler Tech. Every day, we focus on keeping your children out of harm’s way. This week, following on the heels of the school shooting tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut, has presented us with some unusual challenges.
As you may already be aware, today we have had vague, unsubstantiated threats made against two buildings in our district and have responded by having police officers on site in those locations. Both the police presence and the threats they were meant to counteract have generated a great deal of concern among our students, and you, their parents. In addition to the overriding concern about student safety, this situation is having a significant adverse impact on the educational process.
In order to act in the most prudent and cautious manner for the safety of our students and staff, we have decided to cancel all Butler Tech secondary classes for Friday, December 21, 2012. We believe this to be the best way to defuse any perceived threat to Butler Tech and the people who work and learn here.
Moving forward, we believe our winter recess will allow time for the situation to calm down, and will prepare us to resume classes on January 2nd on a more normal footing. In the meantime, we will continue to work with law enforcement and safety authorities to identify any methods we can employ to be even better prepared to safeguard your children.
Happy Holidays! Lisa
